Musical rattles normally consisting of tuned lengths of bone or hardwood suspended at one end from a hand-held frame and used by dancers in the worship of Dionysus and Kybele (Cybele); the rattles were used by Herakles (Heracles or Hercules) to frighten away the Stymphalian Birds during his Sixth Labor.
The word may also be spelled Krotalas, Krotali or Crotali.
