The ancient Greeks were literate and proud of it. The ability to pass information from generation to generation gave them an evolutionary advantage that their illiterate competitors did not enjoy. It also gave the Greeks a better diet than most. Baked bread was one of the tests the ancient Greeks used to measure the civility of an unknown culture.
